The story and the idea of the project the FACE: evolution of the portrait in photography is simple: over the last 10-12 years I organized a large number of international exhibitions of contemporary art and photographs associated with the use of new digital technologies. Evaluating the already completed projects, I realized that this portrait and its evolution can be interesting and relevant topic for an independent exhibition.
I contacted the authors who have participated in my projects, and invited them to this topic. Many have responded immediately. Unfortunately, the attempt to engage the Western museum institutions failed. But already triggered a proven way to work directly with authors.
As a result, the selection of the final list was more than 40 participants from 20 countries. Some authors have participated in my shows, but many held for the first time.
Among the participants there is a very well-known artists such as one of the pioneers of digital art for over 30 years using digital technology in their work, Laurence Gartel American, one of the most famous today world authorities in the photo, American Roger Ballen, who lives in South Africa, Korean Atta Kim (participated in the last Venice Biennale with a solo), Almond Chu from Hong Kong, which is sometimes called "Chinese Mappltorpom", etc.
But many young artists with fresh ideas for the 21st century.
Usually in my projects are not many Russian participants. This time I brought 10 photographers and artists from Moscow, St. Petersburg and other Russian cities. And each of them interprets the portrait.
Sampling was carried out in such a way that ideas do not occur, and presented various techniques inherent in traditional and digital photography.
As a result, formed a very interesting "group" and not intended for complete coverage of all the ideas that are implemented modern photographers, but creates a rather complete picture of today's portrait in contemporary photography.
